Electrosurgical Generator (ESU) Maintenance Guide
Proper maintenance and attention of electrosurgical generators in medical or veterinary facilities is critical. The most important key to the maintenance program for your electrosurgery unit is to keep a regular schedule for the performance of maintenance tasks.  Three factors for providing proper care are: knowing what to do, when to do it and who has the responsibility for it. The person in charge of maintaining the units must be given time in their regular schedule to perform the tasks.

The procedures, which do not require a lot of time to perform, ensure that you receive maximum protection under the unit’s warranty. In addition, you will maximize the return on your investment in capital equipment.

Tips for cleaning the unit

Clean the generator immediately after each use. Avoid using disinfectant compound solvents, abrasive cleaning or similar materials that can scratch the panels or damage the unit’s generator. Here are the basic procedures for cleaning an electrosurgery unit usually recommended by manufacturers:

1.     Turn the unit into the off position. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

2.     Use a disinfectant or mild cleaning solution and damp cloth to wipe down all surfaces on the generator and power cord.

3.     Dry off the unit.

Many healthcare facilities have a validated infection control procedures or guideline provided by your institution to clean the unit.  Make sure that you work carefully to prevent fluids from entering the chassis and causing damage to the unit.

Do not sterilize the ESU.

Check all controls, indicators and displays on the generator unit, especially if it has not been used recently.

Perform a visual inspection

Conduct a visual inspection of the generator a minimum of every six months. Look for signs of wear or damage for the following items:

●      Check for signs of spilled liquids

●      Damaged to the generator – panel, unit casing, connecting cables.

●      Power cord- fraying insulation, fittings, prongs, etc.

●      Power Cable Receptacle - cracks, burn marks, etc.

●      Damaged wall receptacle - cracks, burn marks, etc.

●      Lint, debris or other foreign matter accumulated in or around the generator.

Perform visual checks and read manual of all connecting accessories

Prior to use, the instructions for use of the accessory should be reviewed to ensure the accessory is compatible with the ESU and properly utilized. Any accessory used in conjunction with an electrosurgical generator should be meticulously inspected for damage to the insulation and connecting component of the product. For sterile accessories, always inspect the packaging. If the package has been opened or damaged do not use the product.
